Let's talk about podcast marketing.

And just to make sure I set the proper frame, when I say podcast marketing, I'm talking about getting attention on your podcast.

There are a lot of things that go into marketing a podcast, so let's keep it simple. I'm going to share answers to 3 commonly asked questions I get...

Will <insert podcast hosting service here> help me gain listeners?

Short answer, no.

Your podcast host doesn't market your podcast for you. They're simply there to provide the connection between your audio file and wherever the listener listens to podcasts.

Without your podcast hosting service, the listener wouldn't be able to access your show.

Now, your podcast hosting service might give you insight into listener data, but it’s up to you to do the work of utilizing that data, not your hosting service.

Is social media the best place to promote my podcast?

Typically, no.

I'm not saying social media isn't a good place to promote - I'm saying it's not the best place. In my experience, social media is #3.

The #1 place to promote your podcast is on other podcasts. You're in front of engaged listeners who are most likely to tune in.

The #2 place to promote is email. You can provide direct links to your episodes, making it easy for subscribers to access your content.

Why is growing a podcast so hard?

A lot of podcast marketing comes down to pattern recognition.

Using the Pareto principle, for many, 80% of downloads come from 20% of episodes.

The trick is to identify what you find in those top-performing episodes and replicate them.
